Why coughs come back with the seasons

Change of season, dust, smoke and cold drinks make many people cough. In Ayurveda, a cough that comes with mucus is often linked with Kapha, the dosha of cold and heaviness, while a dry, irritating cough is linked with dryness and Vata. Whatever the label, the aim is to soothe the throat and keep the airways comfortable.

This guide covers common home habits and explains where an Ayurvedic respiratory range may fit. It is general information and does not replace a doctor.

Warm fluids and rest

Warm water through the day, herbal tea with tulsi and ginger, and a pinch of turmeric in warm milk are the traditional first steps. Rest matters too. Many people try to carry on as usual, and the cough then lasts longer.

Gargling with warm salt water can ease a scratchy throat. Avoid ice-cold drinks and ice cream while you recover.

Eat light and warm

Simple soups, khichdi, dal and cooked vegetables are easier to digest than heavy, oily or cold food. Ginger, black pepper and long pepper, together called Trikatu, are traditionally used to keep digestion and the airways comfortable. Avoid curd at night and very sweet or fried food if you notice more mucus.

Avoid smoke and dust

Irritants keep a cough going. Wear a mask in dusty places, avoid smoke from cigarettes and burning waste, and keep your bedroom clean and ventilated. If pollution is high where you live, limit time outdoors early in the morning.

About the Breazy range

Breazy comes in two forms. Breazy Syrup (200 ml) lists Vasaka, Tulasi, Yastimadhu, Kantakari, Amalaki, Haridra, Bibhitaki, Trikatu, Gavjaban, Kulanjan, Phudina Satva and Nilagiri Tail, which is eucalyptus oil. Breazy Tablet (60 tablets) lists Sitopaladi Churna, Trikatu, Vasa, Bibhitak, Yastimadhu, Haridra, Tulsi, Kantakari and Bharangi.

Vasaka, Kantakari and Bharangi are traditionally used to support the airways. Yastimadhu, which is licorice, is used to soothe the throat. Tulsi and Haridra are widely used for general respiratory wellbeing. The syrup suits people who like a liquid, and the tablet is easy to carry. Dosage for each form is on its product page.

Making the most of your visit

Before you start Breazy, write down the medicines and supplements you already take, any allergies, and any conditions you have been told about. Ask your physician three things: whether Breazy suits you, how long to use it, and which signs mean you should stop and call. Bring the pack so the ingredient list can be read together. Ayurvedic medicines are meant to fit into your overall care, and your physician can adjust the plan if your needs change.

Habits matter more than any single product. Pick one or two changes from this guide, keep them for a few weeks and see how you feel. Small, steady changes are easier to keep than a long list.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if a cough lasts more than two weeks, or if it comes with fever, chest pain, wheezing, breathlessness, blood in the sputum or weight loss. Babies, older adults and people with asthma, heart or lung conditions should get medical advice early. Do not stop prescribed medicines.

These are Ayurvedic proprietary medicines for sale in India. Use them only under medical supervision. Read the pack label and talk to your physician before you start, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have a long-term condition or take other medicines. This guide is general information and does not replace medical advice. Shipping across India is free, and you can see all Chaukhambha Healthcare medicines on our Medicines page.
